You have to hold the watch at just the right angle to hear the wheel spinning noise or as ‘sharkman’ described it the rotor whirring sound. I just did another test on my World and the noise lasted approximately 6 sec. Just got a new Hamilton X-Wind the other day and am noticing a LOT of noise when the rotor is turning on the movement. Now, I admit that I'm used to wearing my Submariner, which you might need a stethoscope to hear even when it's winding, but still. It is normal behavior indeed. Both my Breitling Navitimer and IWC St Exupéry Chrono make this noise. My valjoux based navitimer makes all kinds of noise. Runs at chonometer spec though.
If these wheels are not properly lubricated, when winding by the crown will cause the rotor to wind along with the stem action winding. I'm not too sure if this would create a rattling sound though. Moving parts should be expected to make some sort of noise, especially a watches self winding rotor. The rotor only maintains the tension on the spring. It does not wind the watch in terms of increasing spring tension. A new watch or one that has been allowed to run down should be manually wound about 40 turns. It could be a loose rotor. They make a real noise by scraping against the case back, etc, when they get loose. Very simple to fix. However, it may be that. It could equally likely be something else.
